The Albula Valley includes many highlights that few know about. These include the cliff-side trail through the Schaftobel that can hold its own against the Val d’Uina in the Lower Engadine. It is part of the world-class descent from Alp Era.
From Filisur, follow the sign-posted mountain bike trail to Alvaneu Bad and Surava, where the climb to Alp Ozur begins. The good gravel road becomes steeper the higher up you climb, especially in the section after Alp Aclas. Once you’ve climbed some 1000 metres towards Alp Ozur, you’ve pretty much reached the end of the climb. Then you make your way over to Alp Era, where you’ll begin your descent. At first, the trail is readily visible, but it becomes hard to see once you hit the meadow. Just follow the markings and you’ll suddenly find yourself at the start of a truly special singletrail at the forest’s edge. It’s a smooth ride through the pine forest, never steep, always just gliding along with a serpentine section every now and then. You’ll have to ford a stream twice where the trail’s collapsed a bit and you’ll have to buck through the debris. You’ll then finally hit the Schaftobel trail that will take you on a spectacular descent through a cleft in the rock. The scene is reminiscent of the better known Val d’Uina, but the trail here is much less dangerous and also rewards you with a large waterfall. Just below the cleft, the serpentine takes a left towards Alvaneu Bad, where you’ll take the gravel and country roads back to Filisur.
